Rebalancing a Basket

Changing what a Basket holds, what that costs its holders, and how to make it permanent.

Only the manager can change what a Basket holds. Everything else, buying and redeeming and collecting the fee, is open to anyone.

Rebalancing is optional

A Basket that is never rebalanced is a buy-and-hold Basket. That is a legitimate methodology, not neglect: most well-known indexes let their winners run rather than trimming them back to target every night.

Rebalancing means selling some of what it holds to buy something else. You would do it to hold a target split, to follow a rule you published, or to drop a component that no longer belongs.

It is charged to holders, not to you

Worth stating plainly, because the intuition usually runs the other way. Every rebalance sells and buys at market, and that cost comes out of the holdings, which means out of every holder's backing. A Basket that rebalances weekly will trail an identical one that rebalances quarterly.

Trade when your methodology calls for it, not on a schedule for its own sake.

What you cannot do

Rebalancing swaps assets inside the Basket. It cannot move them out. A manager cannot withdraw, cannot mint unbacked tokens, cannot block redemptions, and cannot raise the fee ceilings fixed at launch.

Giving up control

You can hand a Basket to nobody. It then becomes permanently fixed: buying and redeeming carry on working for anyone, forever, but nothing about it can ever be changed again. Not the components, not the fees, not by you and not by anyone who might pressure you.

For a Basket meant to be genuinely neutral, this is the strongest thing you can say, and it is verifiable rather than a promise.

Two things to settle first

Enable recovery-by-anyone, or any token that later lands in the Basket is stuck forever with no manager left to rescue it.

Point the fee recipient somewhere you are content with permanently. Fees keep accruing to that address and it can no longer be changed.
